It always seems to happen at some point. My nice center pull cake of yarn vomits up its guts. It's not a pretty sight. I know that Carol has blogged about this. And if she's not pulling from the center, I'm not pulling from the center either. Who's with me on this?

To my understandings - and experience (which is not as much as most knitters have) - the centre-pull yarn-cake usually collapse after you've knitted with quite an amount of yarn out of that cake. If the yarn is transported in a bag or whatever that would squish the yarn around, the twining in the centre of the cake might get tangled up resulting in the ball 'puking' when you next pull the yarn from the centre.
I have no remedy for this apart from just playing kitty for a while. Other than that, I try to transport the cake that has been used up quite a bit carefully.
I tend to rewind that collapsed center as I much prefer to pull from the center. The current ball, that I'm not taking from the center, has released its center anyway so I had to deal with it and push it back in.

I'm with you. When I first got my ball winder, I had read that you should pull from the center. HA! yarn puke every time. grrrr. I pull from the outside now. No yarn puke.

I find that happens when a lot of yardage is wound into one cake. I typically pull from the center since I travel with my yarn a lot, but you're right. Sometimes it's just as much of a hassle, if not more, to clean up a yarn barf.

for me, it depends on the yarn manufacturer. but 98 times out of 100, I pull outside in, instead of inside out.
I'm with you! I pull from the outside. It comes off nice enough.
I like to roll skeins on my thumb and then pull from the center -- and I do get little pukies from time to time, but nothing too huge -- more like a wee kitty hairball. The yarn cakes off ballwinders seem to disgorge more.
The mind wanders to other vomit tales, involving blueberries, and cheetos, and long car rides on winding country roads ....

It happens to me too...I usually just wind the puke around the cake and go from there.
pulling from the center is so gauche. Knitting from the outside is totally the new cool.
I'm with you - pulling from the center works only so long for me, and then I get really annoyed, and then I try to re-wind, which makes it worse ...

it depends on the material. silky fibers will collapse from both directions. wool and wool blends hold the shape better. I like to center pull- but restrain my skein in a small or a bowl.

This always happens to me when I've done the winding. The very first tug on the center pull strand and I've got the yarn vomit.

I just had this thought myself with some laceweight, which is a BITCH to untangle. I am knitting from the outside.

I started knitting from the outside quite awhile ago. I hate the puking!
My Sea Silk did the same thing! Then got so tangled that I had to cut it... TWICE! I learned my lesson. If it is remotely slippery, I will pull from the outside. So sorry! I hope yours straightens right out!
