Knitwear Smackdown: The Marital Version

I thought I'd interrupt the cavalcade of FO posts to get your input about the current sweater on the needles, the Counterpane Pullover.

I love it. I loved it when it came out in the magazine, and I love it now. I think it is Twinkle-esque, Anthropologie-ish, and has the potential to be a really interesting but wearable garment. The construction is simple and unique, and the central motif is striking. Bulky-weight sweaters are very chic right now, and in cream colored yarn, I think it has a classic yet stylish feel.

My husband, on the other hand, is seriously dubious. He thinks its going to look lumpy and, well, bulky. He thinks it's putting a giant X across my bust, or worse, giant flower petals directly on the girls, in a bad way. For a man who rarely expresses anything but encouragement about my knitwear, this was a vociferous objection.

After looking at a couple of FOs on Ravelry, I think it is a really flattering garment when knit with negative ease, so I am knitting the smallest size, placing the central motif so that it sits more below my bustline, and am modifying the sleeves to make them a bit smaller. I don't often take fashion advice from my husband, but I am just not so sure anymore. I am a small person, and have always shied away from knitting bulky sweaters. This sweater will never qualify for nomination for the Sexy Knitters Club, but for a warm winter sweater, I think it will be funky.

Pepe, by the way, thinks it's awesome.

I just don't know!!! Any input?

If your husband is anything like mine (in that he rarely makes a comment on most knitting), the fact that he made such a strong comment certainly says something. However, I think your mods are going to make this sweater anything but "lumpy and bumpy."

If you are small, it will be easier for you to wear this sweater than if you were large.

Hmmm...I think it's smart of you to check out the fo's on Rav and see how they have turned out. I think it will be fine on you. It looks like there is a bit of funkyness going on under the arms as far as bulk is concerned,b ut like Laurie said, if you're smaller it will look great. And if you want the pattern to be a little more subtle, you can wear a similar colored shirt under.

I agree the negative ease is the way to go with this sweater. With positive ease I think it could easily look lumpy and bumpy.

Continue on knitting the sweater

Well, I would proceed with caution with this one. It does seem as though Mr. Science has a valid point, but after looking at the Ravelry FOs, I can see why you're modifying as you are. I can't wait to see the fo!

It looks to me like a perfectly-centered motif gives a sort of "cross my heart bra" effect, which can be flattering on a small frame. A lower motif just looks droopy to me.

Personally I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole, but I'm not the shape this sweater would flatter. I think if you're willing to reknit to get it just right (probably not a big deal in bulky yarn) or to rip entirely if it turns out to be unflattering, why not give it a try?

I think it's cute but I think it'll be hard to judge unless it's finished and it's on. I'm sure it'll be great!
