No Cinderella Here

So SL number 1 is finished ... well, kind of. It barely fits over my heel. I don't have huge feet -- size 8. This is my first sock and I must have just knitted it way too tightly. What do I do, oh sock gurus? I tried it on before I finished and it was snug but not excruciatingly tight. I think I pinned down the cuff for the picot edging wrong or something. Anyway, I'm not happy with the fit. Maybe I should just redo the cuff? Suggestions?

The bag is also done -- and I love it! I think the handles worked out okay -- I had to unravel a swatch to get enough of the heather yarn and then I used white for the rest. I've been calling it white, but it's the natural wool, not bleached, which is why it felted without a problem. This will become my new bag for my knitting. Yipee!

I love the bag. You must post the particulars (esp. the pattern source) since everyone (well, specifically me), will want to make it too.

As far as your sock, did it fit before you sewed down the picots? Because then it definitely is the way you sewed them down, so rip and resew a little looser. If not, well, then, my dear, you may have a more serious problem.

yay, the banner! Veddy nice. And the bag is marvy -- I second the request for pattern source, plus final dimensions, etc.

Will torment you, Ann, for how you did that banner thing. Coffee sometime? Like, air?

Sorry I didn't post the particulars!

The pattern is from the French Market Bag pattern on Knitty.com and the spiral pattern can be found at:

Tina -- call me! Coffee anytime ...

Love the bag. Thanks for the links to the patterns!
Sucks about the socks though.

When I added a picot edging to my socks, I used a provisional cast-on and after 1 inch did the picots, knit another inch and put the provisional stitches on slightly smaller needles (after all who has two sets of the same size? well, besides me?) and knit one from the live stitches and one from the "cast-on" stitches together. Takes a little longer, but my ankles swell and I like a lot of stretch. Know this doesn't help with socks already knit (I agree with liz k. resew.) but maybe for next time.

The bag is FANTASTIC! Did you make it the same size as the original pattern? It looks perfect for a knitting bag. (Drool)

Well, Laurie (moo!), the st were all funky since my yarn gauge was about 3.5/in. So I followed the dimensions for the flat bottom and then picked up the requisite st. Then on my first round I increased enough to handle the 24 st pattern.

I didn't mean to be so blithe this morning about frogging the sock--I thought about it afterward, that it would be a good idea to give it to someone with a smaller foot. Then I thought further: Especially if that person has only one of them. (Do you really want to knit another?)

Your first socks should be yummy for YOU. As I see it, the alternatives are to frog and start over, or to donate the sock as a Barbie sleeping bag and go out and buy yourself some Lorna's Laces and start a new pair.

Not that I think there's a Barbie anywhere near your household. But if there is, she's the kind who'd enjoy camping out. And if you rip her head off, she'll fit in all the way!

If you think it's the picot that's giving you trouble, can you change the cuff to the ribbed version?

I love the bag. I have tried a sewn picot edge and a provisional cast-on picot edge. The sewn one is much tighter.
